The Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) J-10 ‘Vigorous Dragon’ is a multi-role single seat, single engine fighter aircraft now entering service with the PLAAF. In terms of flight performance it has been described as similar to American F-16 and French Mirage 2000. The latest variant is the 2-seat J-10S, which has been initially designed for the fighter-trainer role. This aircraft has a lengthened nose with two seats mounted in tandem. It also has a larger spine which may house extra electronics or fuel tank. It has also been suggested that this version may also be built as a fighter-bomber with the rear seat being occupied by a systems operator. The J-10S retains full offensive capability with up to 11 weapon stations able to carry 4,500 kg of ordnance or fuel.
